본 연구는 동서 문화교류와 문화접변(文化接變)의 관점에서, 르 퓌앙블레의 <성 미카엘 대천사> 도상을 중심으로, 비잔티움 미술이 서유럽 미술에 미친 영향을 조명하려는 것이다. 따라서 그림의 주제와 기법, 그리고 거기에서 도출되는 의미를 조형적 차원에서 파악하는 종래의 도상분석에 더하여, 당대의 역사와 정치, 그리고 종교의 상호 영향을 고려하고, 비잔티움 황제의 이미지로 그려진 천사 도상이 어떠한 방식으로, 또는 어떠한 경로를 통해 서유럽에 영향을 미치게 되었는가에 관한 역사적 근거를 제시할 수 있도록 노력하였다. 르 퓌앙블레의 노트르담 대성당에 그려진 비잔티움 양식의 거대한 <성 미카엘 대천사>는, 순례여행과 십자군 원정을 통한 프랑스와 비잔티움의 인적・문화적 교류의 산물이다. ‘검은 성모상’을 모신 르 퓌앙블레는 프랑스에서 산티아고 데 콤포스텔라로 향하는 순례의 출발지였으며, 또한 비잔티움 제국의 콘스탄티노플과 에페소, 그리고 예루살렘으로 향하는 순례의 출발지이기도 하였다. 당대 역사나 정치사를 통해 어렴풋이 짐작할 수밖에 없었던 프랑스와 비잔티움의 문화교류는 <성 미카엘 대천사> 도상으로 한층 뚜렷해진다. 또한 <성 미카엘 대천사> 도상은 창의성의 정점에 있었던 당대 미술계의 분위기, 그리고 비잔티움이나 이슬람 등 다양한 문화에 대한 르 퓌앙블레 주교들의 관대하고 포용적인 예술정책을 반영한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper attempts to highlight the influence of Byzantine art on western European art. This analysis is centered on the image of Le Puy-en-Velay’s St. Michael Archangel, looking through the lens of acculturation between the West and East. As such, the scope of this paper is not limited to analyzing the subject and technique of the image to gain a formative understanding. It attempts to provide historical evidence on how history, politics, and religion interacted with each other in a way that the image of the Archangel — portrayed as the image of a Byzantine emperor — impacted Western Europe. The giant Byzantine drawing of St. Michael Archangel on Le Puy-en-Velay’s cathedral is a product of the pilgrimage and the Crusades — the cultural exchange between France and Byzantium. Le Puy-en-Velay, where the Black Virgin Mary is located, was the starting point for a pilgrimage heading from France to Santiago de Compostela. At the same time, it was also the starting for a pilgrimage towards the Byzantine empire’s Constantinople, Ephesus, and Jerusalem. The cultural exchange between France and Byzantium becomes clear with the St. Michael Archangel image. The image is also a reflection of the flourishing art of the time, generously embracing cultures from various origins such as Byzantium and Islam.
