키로스 감독 테오도레토스의 정통성 연구: 생애와 기독론 논쟁 과정을 중심으로 = A Study on the Orthodoxy of Theodoret of Cyrrhus: Focusing on His Life and the Process of Christology Controversy

Theodoret of Cyrrhus, as a representative commentator of the Antiochene school, was a central figure in the Christological debates of the 5th century, engaging in significant disputes with the Alexandrian school. This led to him being misunderstood as a Nestorian. However, he was thoroughly educated in theology under devout parents. He adhered to the theology of the apostles and was a staunch defender of the teachings of the Council of Nicaea. He had firmly rooted himself in orthodox theology prior to the Christological debates between Nestorius of Constantinople and Cyril of Alexandria and remained steadfast in his beliefs throughout. Despite this, he was criticized and attacked for political reasons, primarily because he could not sever his ties with his friend Nestorius. Ultimately, he was condemned at the Second Council of Ephesus in 449. Subsequently, he declared a separation from Nestorius and was restored at the Council of Chalcedon in 451. However, some scholars argue that while he declared a separation from Nestorius at the Chalcedonian Council, he did not abandon Nestorian theology. This paper examines Theodoret's birth, upbringing, and the process of the Christological debates to confirm his unwavering adherence to orthodox theology. In particular, Theodoret defended his theology by sending letters to various individuals. Therefor, the paper will also present portions of these letters in their original text and translation to directly explore Theodoret’s self-defense.
