시라카와 시즈카 한자학의 배경과 특징: 한자학의 배경과 언어학적, 한자의 형태 분석적 특성을 바탕으로 = The Flow and Characteristics of Chinese Character Studies by Shirakawa Shizuka: Based on his Academic Pathways, Linguistic Aspects, and Morphological Characteristics of Chinese Characters

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Shirakawa Shizuka is a renowned Japanese scholar on ancient East Asia, but he is unfamiliar in Korea except for his position as a scholar of Chinese characters that found value in the shapes of characters with few studies on him. Growing out of this viewpoint, this study aimed to point out that his study began with the reading of Shijing, 詩經, and Manyoushu 萬葉集 to trace back to the origin of the East Asia and demonstrate that his methodology was linguistic on one hand and qunxingxiang 群形象 on the other hand. Shirakawa is known as a scholar of Chinese characters, but he originally did research on Shijing and Manyoushu a classical work of Japan. Being tired of Qing’s kaozhengxue 考證學 those days, however, he came across the research by Wudachneg 吳大澂 and realized that ancient literature should be read in the language of those days and that folk symbols held a religious meaning for a form.
Trying to read ancient literature in the language of those days, Shirakawa began his “linguistic description” study by investigating bronze scripts as contemporary artifacts of Shijing. He also conducted “diachronic linguistics” research by tracing back to the study of oracle bone scripts from Shang and tracking the process of meanings spreading from roots to find the origin of the meanings of characters used in Zhou Dynasty. In the course of his linguistic study, he used yixingyiyi 一形一意 which means a meaning for a form and originated in Wudachneg’s argument, in his analysis of Chinese characters in terms of forms. He argued that when a shape was combined with another, it would depict a real scene of a religious rite based on a combination of different forms rather than classical huiyi 會意 based on a combination of different meanings, understanding each Chinese character based on scenes. His way of understanding Chinese characters will certainly help to grant the value of re-enactment to the use of Chinese characters as a scene of a ceremony and reinforce the understanding of the origin of the East Asia according to re-enactment.
