This study attempts to interpret ‘Korean Wave Phenomena’ as an aspect of the exchange of media culture. “Hallyu” or the Korean Wave, in a broad sense, means a boom of Korean pop culture in East Asia including China. In recent years, it becomes a term referring to the phenomena of intensively consuming Korean cultural products among the young Chinese.
However, Korean domestic media overuse the term “Hallyu” showing the nationalistic opinions as Korean culture dominates China. To examine this kind of Korean Wave Phenomena as an aspect of the exchange of media culture, it is necessary to understand the cultural homogeneity and difference accurately in the East Asian areas of Korea, China, Japan, and Taiwan in addition to the general consideration of the media.
The Korean Wave is a section of such global media cultural exchanges. Another important aspect to understand the Korean Wave is that American pop culture affects the creation of Korean media culture. In that Korean pop culture is a grafting and a variation of American media culture, the Korean pop culture is, so to speak, a product of media imperialism. In that sense, it is natural that such criticism arises that there is no Korean culture in the Korean Wave. Accordingly, it is very risky that the Korean media view the Korean Wave as pseudo imperialism or a frame of cultural domination.
This study summarizes theoretical outlines to understand media culture flows in the East Asia that are sparked by the Korean Wave Phenomena. For this purpose, this study critically reviews cultural imperialism and media imperialism that are considered as a culture exchange model of the world system, and reviews cultural globalization, cultural hybridization and cultural discount theory as the theoretical resources for the exchanging theories, which have counter characteristics of cultural imperialism and media imperialism.
