로베르 르빠주의 공연에 나타난 문화상호주의 연구 = A Study of the inter-culturalism of the performances directed by Robert Lepage

국문 초록 (Abstract)

오늘날 연극은 더 많은 관객과의 소통을 위해 나라와 민족, 인종을 넘어선 문화의 공통분모를 찾아내려고 시도하고 있으며, 이러한 흐름에서 문화상호주의 연극이 학계의 주목을 받고 있다. 본 연구는 어느 한 쪽으로도 치우치지 않는 보편적 언어를 지닌 문화상호주의 연극을 모색하는 것을 목적으로 이색적인 문화상호주의 연극을 만들어 세계무대에서 주목받고 있는 로베르 르빠주의 작품을 고찰하고자 한다. 르빠주의 연극이 세계적으로 인정받고 있는 이유는, 첫째, 고전을 새로운 시각으로 재조명해 현대인의 정서에 맞게 각색한 것이고, 둘째, 언어가 다른 관객과의 소통을 위해 시·청각적 이미지를 적극 활용해 어느 곳에서나 통용될 수 있는 연극언어를 만들어낸 것, 그리고 셋째, 어느 한 문화를 우위에 두는 것이 아닌 각 문화의 특수성을 담은 배경, 의상, 언어 등으로 다양한 문화들이 조화를 이루는 독특한 연극 문화를 만들어 낸 것 등이라 할 수 있다. 그러므로 본 연구는 르빠주가 연출한 공연작품을 면밀히 분석해 봄으로써 문화상호주의 연극의 올바른 위상을 정립해 보고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The dramatic arts of today endeavor to seek out the comment elements of culture that transcend nations, peoples and races in order to interconnect with the wide audience, and in this vein inter-cultural performances are receiving more and more attention from academic circles. This paper analyzes various work directed by Robert Lepage, who seeks to put on inter-cultural performances with the objective of creating plays based on unbiased universal theatre language. The reasons that Lepage’s performances are achieving global recognition are as follows: first, he reinterprets classical works so as to render them more adaptable for the modern audience; second, he actively uses audio-visual images thereby allowing his audiences worldwide to overcome language barriers and thus creating a universal theatre language; third, he creates a style of theatre culture that blends the unique background, costume and language of different cultures in a way that not prioritize the value of western culture. This paper therefore will seek to examine the stature of inter-cultural theatre by closely scrutinizing the performances of Lepage.
