This paper aims to reveal the current state of ESG(Environmental, Social and Governance) between the two countries through vocabulary analysis of 90 ESG-related articles collected from major portal sites in Korea and Japan in the second half of 2022.
In both countries, ‘ESG, enterprise, environmental, social, and governance, development, evaluation, investment, approach’ and ‘goal’ are high-frequency words. In addition, Korea showed remarkable usage in terms of ESG-related business implementation, such as ‘planning, support, participation, hosting, strengthening, and cooperation’, while Japan showed remarkable use in global issues or investment-related words such as ‘SDGs, world, ESG investment, investor, sustainability’, and ‘disclosure of information’. Considering the number of related words included, ‘ESG, enterprise, environment, evaluation, investment, social’ and ‘management, business’ can be said to be common keywords.
According to Bunruigoihyou (1962, 2004), Korea has a significant difference in <institution>, <governance・politics>, <tool>, <materials>, <kinds·example>, and <work>. In particular, many government agencies, terms related to establishment and management, eco-friendly, ESG ratings, and domestic companies appeared. On the other hand, Japan has a significant difference in <nation・region>, <race・people>, and <economy>. In particular, terms related to capital and money, investments, funds, foreign, foreign companies, and experts appear frequently.
Korea is focusing on ESG-related businesses in the government and domestic companies, and is particularly concerned about ESG ratings. It focuses on the environment and emphasizes eco-friendliness. The progress of the discourse in the fields related to society and governance of both countries is relatively slow. Meanwhile, Japan is focused on investment in the global trend of implementing SDGs. In the future, Korea needs to connect with SDGs and make efforts to practice them.
