차등 근대화와 식민지 문화구조 인쇄본 구소설과 `하위대중`의 상상체계 = Differential Modernization and Culture Structure in Colonial Korea : Printed Old Style Novel and the Imagination System of `Colonial Subaltern`

국문 초록 (Abstract)

식민지 시기 간행된 `인쇄본 구소설`을 전통문화의 잔재로 이해하는 기존의 일반적 관념을 벗어나 그것을 근대문화의 일부로 간주하고 근대성 해석의 새로운 촉매로 사고해야 한다는 것이 이 글의 출발점이다. 20세기의 구소설은 식민지 조선 안에서 발흥하고 있던 서구적 근대문화와 공존했다. 그것은 외형적으로 문명 교체기에 나타나는 보편적 중첩의 형태를 띠고 있었지만 한편으로는 식민지적 간섭이 개입되어 나타난 특별한 문화구조의 산물이기도 했다. `이중출판시장` 상황에서 `내지`의 출판물과 경쟁할 수 없었던 조선출판자본의 강요된 선택이라는 측면과 차등근대화의 전략으로 사회적 헤게모니를 추구하던 조선인 엘리트들에 의해 구시대의 유물로 배제된, 두개의 차별이 구소설과 같은 조선의 전통문화가 근대적 대중화의 과정에서 겪었던 생존의 조건이었다. 그렇지만 구소설은 식민지 `하위대중`의 주체적인 문화결정을 상징하는 존재였을 뿐 아니라 당대 대중의 사회인식과 문화심리를 결정하는데 영향을 미친 요인 가운데 하나였다. 그동안 우리는 서구 문화형태를 주류적인 것으로 전면화하려는 압박으로 인해 전통사회의 인식방법과 미학체계가 한국의 근대문화에 미친 실질적인 영향에 대해 무관심했다. 하지만 전통서사에 대한 진화론적인 해석에서 벗어나 그 작용과 파장의 실체를 새로운 각도에서 설명할 수 있다면 한국 근대성에 대한 이전과는 다른 차원의 해명이 가능할 것으로 판단한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper started from these points : printed old style novels during colonial period of Korea ought to be considered not only as a part of modern culture, but also be deservedly comprehended as a new catalyst for appreciating modernity. In other words, we need to be free from a prejudice thinking `printed old style novels` were nothing more than the vestige of old days. In fact, old style novel of 20th century co-existed with western modern culture rising in colonial Korea. It externally seems to be a usual overlapping in age of civilization shift. In other hand, however, we may not miss that it was a result from an unusual cultural structure due to the colonial intervention. There were dual discriminations in the survival conditions of Korean traditional culture such as old style novel : Publishing old style novels was an inevitable choice for Korean publication capitals who could not compete with advanced publications from mainland Japan; at the same time, old style novels were excluded as a old days legacy by new elites of colonial Korea who were pursuing the social hegemony with a strategy ― discriminated modernity. However old style novel was what symbolized `Colonial Subaltern`s cultural subjectivity and also one of important elements that influenced on social perception and cultural psychology. Due to pressure which would generalize western culture as a main stream, we have been ignorant about essential influences of both the perceptive method of traditional society and aesthetics system. If the substantial role and impact of traditional narrative could be explained from a new perspective, not from evolutionary analysis, I think it might be possible to shed light on the modernity of Korea in a different level.
