CREEDS.--A man who professes to have no creed is either an infidel or a fool. Faith rests indifferently upon the evidence of our senses or our consciousness; sometimes on both. Thus, by the evidence of our senses, we believe in the existence of the material world, and the objects, visible or invisible around us. I have not, it is true, the same evidence of the existence of the atmosphere around me, which is invisible, that I have of the existence of the paper on which I am writing; to the evidence furnished by the sense of touch, in the former case, there is, in the latter, added that of sight.
