The purpose of this study was to examine how the execution of traditional and creative children's-song programs would affect the improvement of the five-year-old young children's vocabulary. The research questions were posed as below: First, would the traditional and creative children's-song programs have different effect on improving young children's use and comprehension of vocabulary? Second, would the effect of the traditional children's-song program on improving children's use and comprehension of vocabulary differ with children's sex? The subjects of this study were the live-year-old 72 children who attended a kindergarten in the city of P.
The experiment was carried out over two groups, 20 times, from May 1 through July 13, 1998. The test instrument used in this study was Kwun Kyung Ahn(1981)'s Test of Young Children's Use and Comprehension of Vocabulary. Covariance analysis was carried out, and the collected data were analyzed by SPSS/PC+ program.
The findings of this study were as below:
1) As a result of looking into the improvement of the five-year-old young children's vocabulary, both groups, which were the experimental group using the>. traditional children's-song program and the comparative group employing the creative children's-song program, showed improvement in vocabulary. But there were no statistically significant disparities in the improvement of vocabulary comprehension between the groups, although their improvement of vocabulary use differed with each other significantly.
2) Concerning whether the experimental group's children with the traditional children's song program showed different improvement in both vocabulary use and comprehension according to their sex, there appeared no disparity in both vocabulary use and comprehension between boys and girls.
