“습지의 중심은 바닥이 없다” = “The Wet Centre is Bottomless” : Modernity and the Literary Representation of the Wetland

국문 초록 (Abstract)

습지에 대한 문학적 재현은 놀라울 정도로 부족한 편인데 이는 모더니티에서 습지의 주변적 위상을 의미한다. 습지에 대한 부정적 인식은 모더니티 고유의 현상이라기보다는 자연과 상호작용하며 살아온 인간의 오랜 경험의 산물이다. 그러나 모더니티가 진전되면서 습지에 대한 반감은 더욱 심화되어 고인 물은 죽은 물 혹은 썩은 물이었으며 습지 또한 죽음과 질병, 우울, 공포의 땅, 즉 한마디로 ‘어둠의 영역’으로서 가능하면 피하고 필요에 따라 제거해야 할 모더니티의 타자로 존재해왔다. 합리적 모더니티의 관점에서 습지의 애매함 혹은 당혹스러움은 거주하기에 적절하지 않으면서 경작하기에도 부적합한 공간이란 사실에 기인하며, 모더니티의 기획에는 이런 애매한 성격의 습지를 배수하고 개발하는 과정도 포함된다. 주체와 대상, 몸과 환경, 자연과 문화, 시간과 공간 등을 구분하는 모더니티의 이분법적 사고틀 안에서는 습지를 마른 땅과 수중 생태계 사이의 어느 지점에 위치한 서식지 정도로 이해해왔다. 그래서 물도 아니고 뭍도 아닌 습지는 중심에서 벗어난 채 늘 주변부에 남아 있었다. 반면, 이처럼 습지가 합리적 모더니티의 관심의 건너편에 놓여 있거나 혹은 적대감의 대상으로 존재해왔다는 사실이 때로는 매력으로 작용하는 상황도 있었다. 모더니티의 주류에 동화될 수 없었던 주변인들, 즉 모더니티의 또 다른 타자에게 습지는 삶의 현장 혹은 생명의 연장을 위해 불가피한 공간이 되었지만 그들에게도 습지는 여전히 삶과 죽음, 빛과 어둠이 공존하는 양가적 공간이었다. 그러나 흥미롭게도 20세기 후반에 생물지역주의와 같은 생태주의적 관심이 일면서 기존의 ‘습지’ 관련 어휘들도 가치중립적 의미 혹은 적어도 양면성을 띠어간다. 모더니티의 전 과정을 통하여 습지 담론은 때로는 습지의 존재의의를 그 타자성 혹은 현실적 쓸모없음에서 추구하였고 또 각종 포스트주의 시대에는 변화하는 생태주의 의식을 반영하여 모더니티의 한 속성인 자아성찰을 포함한 모더니티의 자기변화 과정을 드러낸다고 이해될 수 있다. 다시 말해서 이와 같은 새로운 인식을 포함한 전체 습지담론이 모더니티 상황의 인간정신의 궤적을 그려내고 있다고 볼 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The wetland has scarcely presented itself in literature, reflecting its marginal status in the course of modernity. The negative attitudes towards the wetland, which are prevalent in the West and in the East alike, might be an outcome of long human experiences in which man has lived on earth interacting with nature over ages. With the advance of modernity, however, the antipathy to the wetland has so deepened that the various forms of wetland came to be regarded as the land of death, illness, melancholy and fear, or rather the domain of darkness which should be, if possible, avoided or eliminated as the other of modernity. The wetland has been ambiguous or embarrassing under rational modernity, for it is simplified as nothing other than various habitats between water and land. It is neither appropriate for human dwelling nor adequate to be cultivated: which is to say that it is a project of modernity to drain this kind of ambiguous space and transform it into arable land or dwelling space. In terms of dichotomous separation such as subject and object, body and environment, nature and culture, or time and space under modernity, the wetland has always remained marginal far away from the centre. The wetland which defies easy access, on the other hand, has sometimes worked as the field of attraction for the very fact that it has been left at the other side of concern or regarded with hostility throughout the persistent self-changing process of modernity. It was another ‘other’ of modernity, or more specifically those that modernity has marginalised who have not been possibly able to assimilate themselves into the mainstream under modernity that it served as site for their lives or space for their survival. They have found in the wetland life and death, or light and darkness, at the same time. Interestingly enough, however, the terms designating ‘wetland’ shed off their negative connotations, gaining neutral meanings or at least ambivalence around themselves, along with environmentalist or deep-ecologist bio-regionalism dawning in the late 20th century. It means that the discourse of wetland, now seeking the raison d’etre of the wetland in its otherness or uselessness in the everyday world and now reflecting ecological perspectives in this age of politically correct post-isms, betrays the changes of modernity or its self-reflexivity on one hand and, on the other, traces the soul of man under modernity.
