Te and a Degree Phrase in Korean

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper proposes the syntactic structure of Korean comparatives. Korean is argued to have a DegP, and te ‘more’ in comparatives, in contrast to the traditional studies which have considered it as an adjunct, is claimed to have a status as a head which plays a crucial role to form a comparative. All predicates are assumed to be of type <e, t> and a degree argument is introduced by a functional projection. The projection of a functional head # converts the type of lexical predicates into type <d, <e, t>>, which, in turn, makes possible the projection of a DegP as its Specifier. A DegP consists of a Deg head, a -pota-phrase ‘than-phrase’, and a differential measure phrase. This DegP, further, forms a constituent along with a lexical predicate head. This syntactic structure of comparatives is also confirmed by the evidence from selection restrictions and constituency.
