A multiple-tool head is usually used for machining complex shape products in production processes. For monitoring of wear of such multiple tools, this study aims to design a real time remote monitoring system via internet, and applies this system to an in-site machine tool equipped with multiple-tool head. The proposed monitoring system is divided into a local system installed to a machining site and a remote system located at an office or another laboratory. Using the proposed system, this study carries out monitoring experiments for two kinds of tools such as new tools and partially worn tools, the respective signals monitored are compared with each other, and the corresponding surface roughnesses of some workpieces are also measured.
As a result of this study, it is expected that the proposed system predicts the multiple-tool wear and failure in real time, and can notify the appropriate replacement timing for each tool.
