빈(貧)과 낙(樂)에 대한 성찰 -고봉과 퇴계의 경우를 중심으로- = Poverty and Pleasure of Life -Focusing on Gobong and Toegye-

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In April, 1570, Gobong Ki Daeseung, who retired from the center of politics, Seoul to Gwangju, South Jeolla Province, sent a letter to Toegye Yi hwang in Andong, Gyeongsang Province. This paper is to analyze the following issues discussed in the letter. First, what is a Confucian orientation established by their encounters? Second, what is the ultimate feelings of pleasure from which their moral and aesthetic states are transformed? In this paper, I focused on how Confucian scholars such as Gobong and Toegye accepted their poverty. Confucian intellectuals tried to find a genuine pleasure by searching for the Way while being content to live in honest poverty rather than overcoming it and making money. They were not disturbed by the state of poverty, but transcended emotional liking and disliking and attempted to find pleasure from their lives. This process proves their aesthetic and uplifted mind, which may sound irony. Their Confucian state can be named as the aesthetic sense of pleasure. In sum, this paper is to find the way of encounters between Yenongnam Confucianists and Honam ones through the example of Gobong and Toegye. They shared their philosophical ideas and their Confucian lifestyle such as the ethics of appointment and resignation. In addition, I will reveal Gobong``s state of sensibility through his theories of kongyanlechu(孔顔樂處), yanzihaoxuelun(顔子好學論) and Four Beginnings and Seven Feelings.
