It seems that there is no other poem in which “I” appears as frequently as those poems of Baek Suk and Lee Sang. A total of 96 poems of Baek Suk used “I” as poetic subject. “I” appeared 147 times in Baek Suk``s poems. “I” appeared more in Lee Sang``s poems than Baek Suk``s poems. A total of 48 poems of Lee Sang used “i” 324 times as poetic subject. The symbols of “I” appeared in the poems of Lee Sang and Baek Suk are very similar and also different at the same time. It would not be possible to explain it simply with the fact that they had a strong sense of identity. If a poem is a first-person monologue, then “I” will be assumed in a poem as a subject. Nonetheless, that “I” is apparent in the contents of a poem can be deemed as a kind of emphasis. Moreover, whether “I” is apparent or not apparent directly in the contents of a poem would cause a significant difference in the expression and meaning of a poem. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the symbol of “I” appeared in the poems of Lee Sang and Baek Suk in the relationship with the modern era as regarding the symbol of “I” as an expression of individual identity living in the modern era. Also, it aimed to verify how those poets would cross the modern era like a huge storm as a subject in relation to the identity of a subject living in the modern era. It is also a review about the present state of the poems of Lee Sang and Baek Suk since it can highlight again the attitude of the poems living in a complex era.
