In order to investigate the friction properties of clutch facing materials with two different amounts of Cu against two different fly wheel materials, the gray cast iron and the spheroidal graphite cast iron, sliding friction tests were carried out under several different loads and speeds.
The experimental results indicated that the friction properties of clutch facing materials are influenced on the thermal conductivities of the facing material and the counter material. In both materials with high thermal conductivities, friction coefficient is exhibited in high value under the severe sliding condition. However the change of friction coefficient and its amplitude as a function of the applied load become decreased. The friction properties of clutch facing material depends on the formation of a film on the surface of counter material.
