과잉 결정이란 무엇인가? = What is Overdetermination?

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문에서 필자는 과잉 결정이란 무엇인지에 대한 기존의 명시적 접근(들)이 불만족스럽다는 것을 보이고 그 대안을 제시하고자 한다. 기존의 이론가들은 주로 어떤 사건이 과도 결정되었는지가 그 사건에 대한 두 개 이상의 독립된 충분 원인이 있느냐에 의해서 결정된다고 생각해왔다. 그러나 필자의 견해에 따르면, 과도 결정에 대해서 우리가 암묵적으로 전제하고 있는 인과 라인 중심 접근법이 있으며, 과도 결정에 대한 이런 암묵적인 전제를 명시적으로 드러내는 것을 통해서 보다 만족스런 과도결정 이론을 만들어 낼 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In this paper, I propose a new conception of overdetermination and defend it. Philosophers have thought that what is essential to overdetermination situations is the existence of (at least) two independent sufficient causes. I argue that this conception is fundamentally misguided. According to my alternative conception, what is essential to overdetermination situations is the existence of two distinct causal lines. I analyze the notion of causal line with that of (causal) explanatory connection and causes and show that this alternative conception is much more satisfactory than the traditional one.
