Prostaglandins(PG) have been implicated as a modulator of both humoral and cellular immune responses. Threfore, inhibitor of the cyclooxygenase pathway may account for the up-regulating effects of immune response, but the effects of aspirin(ASA) on the immune responses are yet unclear. Inthis experiment, ASA-treated mice showed the increase of cellular immune response which was measured by footpad swelling reaction against SRBC or ear swelling reaction to 2, 4-dinitro-1-fluorobenzene(DNFB). And this effect was slightly differ in degree depending the timing and/or dose of ASA. However, antibody responses to SRBC were not influenced by ASA. In vitro effects of ASA on the blastogenesis of human peripheral blood lymphocytes(PBL) to phytohemagglutinin(PHA) or allogeneic PBL and E-rosette formation to SRBC, and on migration of chicken leukocytes were also evaluated. ASA decreased the responsiveness of PBL and migration of chicken leukocytes, but slightly increased the rosette formation of human PBL. These results suggest that ASA act as an immunomodulator.
