This study investigates the ownership and management of sawijeon (寺位田, temple service lands) by royal temples (wŏndang) in late Joseon, based on extant documentary sources. Royal temples in this period possessed sawijeon of tax-exempt character, which had been established through the Naesusa and palace estates. However, from the late seventeenth century onward, as regulations on palace lands were tightened, the scale of sawijeon attached to royal temples was likewise reduced. Nevertheless, the allocation of sawijeon did not entirely cease.
Royal temples held sawijeon in multiple forms of ownership. Broadly, there were indirectly held lands and directly held lands. In the case of indirect ownership, the structure of possession was “Naesusa/Palace – Royal Temple – Local Landowner,” whereas direct ownership followed the pattern “Naesusa/Palace – Royal Temple (as landowner).” Through these holdings, royal temples secured financial resources for their operation by collecting rents from tenant cultivators.
The royal temples obtained funds for their management by collecting land rents from the tenant farmers of these sawijeon. For example, in 1832 Yongjusa Temple collected dojo from indirectly owned sawijeon and both dojo and sejo from directly owned sawijeon. At that time, the dojo was delivered to Yongdonggung, while the sejo was used for temple management expenses. This case illustrates how royal temples functioned as landowners and managed sawijeon as an economic basis for their activities in late Joseon. Ultimately, the sawijeon of royal temples in late Joseon can be characterized as operating within a multilayered ownership structure, in which indirect and direct ownership coexisted, and sustained by a dual system of revenue.
