자기충실성과 의미 있는 삶에 관한 후랭크후르트(Harry Frankfurt)의 견해 비판 = A critique of Frankfurt’s view of integrity and a meaningful life

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고의 목표는 자기충실성(integrity)과 의미 있는 삶에 관한 후랭크후르트의 견해를 비판하는 것이다. 후랭크후르트는 공시적(synchronic) 자기충실성과 통시적(diachronic) 자기충실성을 구분하는데, 본고에서는 후자에 관해 다룬다. 본고에서 비판하고자 하는 그의 주장은 다음과 같다. 무엇을 소중히 여기는 것은, 그 소중히 여기는 대상이 무엇이든지 간에, 통시적 자기충실성을 부여하는 근거가 될 수 있고, 또한 그러한 삶은 의미 있는 삶이다. 이 주장이 가지는 함축 중 하나는 하찮은 혹은 악한 목표를 소중히 여기는 삶도 의미 있는 삶일 수 있다는 것이다. 이 입장을 비판하기 위하여, 우선 그의 견해가 의미 있는 삶에 관한 주관주의적 입장임을 밝힐 것이다. 또한 그의 견해가 주관주의적 입장이 가지는 문제점을 피할 수 없음을 주장할 것이다. 만약 후랭크후르트가 주관주의적 입장이 가지는 문제점을 감수하고자 한다면, 그의 견해는 의미 있는 삶에 관해 널리 받아들여지고 있는 중요한 기초적인 가정을 무시한다고 주장할 것이다. 그 기초적인 가정이란 다음과 같다. 다른 조건들이 동일하다면, 의미 있는 삶을 사는 것이 그렇지 않은 것보다 낫다. 하찮은 것이나 악한 목표를 소중히 여기며 추구하는 삶이 의미 있는 삶일 수 있다는 후랭크후르트의 주장은 위와 같은 기본적인 가정과 양립 불가능한 것으로 보인다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The aim that I pursue in this essay is to argue against Frankfurt's view of integrity and a meaningful life. Frankfurt makes a distinction between integrity in the synchronic sense and integrity in the diachronic sense, and this essay concerns the latter. The claim that I criticize in this essay is the following: caring about something can be the basis for an ascription of integrity and what makes one's life meaningful, regardless of the value of the object of caring. One of the contentions that can derive from this claim is that caring about frivolous or wicked aims can be the basis for a meaningful life. In arguing against his position, I show that his view can be regarded as a subjectivist view of a meaningful life. Next, I argue that his view cannot avoid the problems the subjectivist view faces. I also argue for the following: if Frankfurt bites the bullet by virtue of embracing the problems that the subjectivists have, then his view will ignore an important assumption regarding a meaningful life. The important assumption is this: other things being equal, living a meaningful life is better than living a meaningless life. The claim that the pursuit of a frivolous or wicked aim can make one's life meaningful does not seem to be compatible with the assumption.
