노천명의 감옥시 연구 = A Study of Noh Cheon-myong’s Poetry in prison

국문 초록 (Abstract)

시인 노천명은 한국전쟁 당시 북한군에게 부역을 한 죄로 감옥 생활을 했다. 본 연구는 노천명의 시 창작에 지대한 영향을 줬을 것으로 보이는 부역 사건의 내막과 실체에 관해서 논할 것이다. 그리고 그가 수감 중에 쓴 시를 대상으로 감옥이라는 공간의 의미가 어떤 방식으로 시의 주제의식과 시인의 내면을 변화시키는지 확인해보고자 한다.
감옥이라는 특별한 공간에서 창작한 시들은 그의 다른 시들에 비해 사상적 결여와 기질적 특성, 자기중심적 정신세계의 현현 등의 이유로 문학적 가치를 얻지 못했다는 비판이 주를 이루었다. 그러나 수감 기간에 쓴 시들을 전체적으로 조망한 결과 시간의 흐름에 따라 시풍의 변모 현상이 뚜렷하게 목격되었다. 수감 초기에 쓴 것으로 추정되는 시들에서는 비록 시인에게서 바라던 시대의식은 없을지언정 과장이나 자기변명이 아닌 엄정한 성찰에 바탕을 둔 냉정한 시각과 적나라한 인간 심리를 엿볼 수 있다. 그리고 자신의 부역 혐의가 부당함을 시간의 흐름과 정세의 변화에 따라 인지하게 된다. 감옥에 투옥된 사실이 시대의 착오였고 모순이었음을 ‘부역행위특별처리법’이나 지인들의 구명운동 소식 등의 경로를 통해 접하면서 그런 변화의 양상들을 시에 담아내고 있다. 그리고 출감에 즈음하여 감옥이라는 제한된 공간을 자기만의 것으로 내면화하고 종국에는 자신만의 독특한 미감을 살려낸 작품들을 남기게 되었음을 고찰하고자 한다.

The poet Noh Cheon-myung was imprisoned for collaborating with the North Korean army during the Korean War. This study will discuss the background and reality of the collaboration incident, which is believed to have had a significant impact on Noh Cheon-myung’s poetry. Additionally, it aims to examine how the meaning of the prison space transformed the themes and the inner world of the poet through the poems he wrote while incarcerated.
Poems created in the unique environment of prison have often been criticized for lacking ideological depth, exhibiting temperament traits, and reflecting a self-centered mental world, leading to a perception of diminished literary value compared to his other works. However, a comprehensive review of the poems written during his imprisonment reveals a clear transformation in his poetic style over time. The poems presumed to have been written in the early stages of his incarceration, while lacking the desired sense of the times from the poet, nonetheless offer a cold perspective based on rigorous reflection rather than exaggeration or self-justification, revealing stark insights into human psychology.
As time passed, he began to recognize the injustice of the charges against him, influenced by the changing circumstances and the flow of time. He came to understand that his imprisonment was a historical error and a contradiction, which he expressed in his poetry through information received from the ‘Special Law on the Treatment of Collaboration Acts’ and news of rescue efforts from acquaintances. Ultimately, as he approached his release, he internalized the limited space of the prison as his own and produced works that showcased his unique aesthetic sensibility.
This study aims to demonstrate that Noh Cheon-myung’s poetry is not merely a product of the collaboration incident but also reflects his inner transformation and the historical context he experienced. His experiences in prison enriched his poetic world and highlighted his originality.
