Abstract
Li Kyu-bo(李奎報, 1168-1241) is the representative literary figure of the Koryo dynasty. At the age of 9 years he was composing in Chinese, so that those around him called him a genius. He passed the civil service examination and rose to high office in the government. He loved wine and poetry, and it is said that when he was drunk he could write without interruption, so that he was known as "Racing Brush" (走筆), Li Kyu-bo's Dongguk Isangguk Jip(東國李相國集) contains about 2000 poems and about 500 essays. In his poetry he disregarded form and excluded nothing from his subject matter, which show's his creativity .
About 90 poems show the influence of Li Po(李白,701~762) either in terms of relating episodes from Li Po's life, or in terms of quoting from Li Po's works. However, the quotes are not simple quotation. Li Kyu-bo always changed them, again showing his creativity.
When peaple compaired him to Li Po he used to say that the difference was the difference between heaven and earth, He always said he was like to have known Li Po, to compete against him in poetry and to drink with him.
Li Kyu-bo and Li Po share number of similarity. Both have legend surrounding their names. Both wrote a great deal of poetry, wrote it very fast and avoided rhetoric and over decoration. Both wrote official documents for the king, and both endured exile. Beth had the experience of failing the civil service examination before eventually passing, and both were given the title Hanrim haksa(輪林學士). Not only did these two men have that same name, they had similar personality, and great poetic talent, and even though 500 years separate them in history, Li Kyu-bo was rightfully called the Li Po of Koryo.
