디스토피아의 유토피아 : 신경향파 소설의 정치적 무의식 = Utopia in Dystopia: the Political Unconscious in the New Tendency Novel

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 신경향파 문학을 프롤레타리아 문학으로 나아가기 위한 과도기적인 것으로 파악하는 기존의 독해 방식에서 벗어나, 신경향파 소설의 폭력적 감각을 ‘프롤레타리아 그로테스크’적인 것으로 보고, 이들 소설의 정치적 무의식을 읽어내는 데 목적이 있다. 신경향파 소설에서 가난의 재현은 식민지 조선의 굶주린 현실을 리얼하게 보여주기도 하지만, 리얼리티를 초과하는 지점과도 연결되어 있다. 소설 속에서 가난은 항상 주인공을 극단적 상황에 몰리게끔 하는데, 그럴 때마다 빈번히 등장하는 것 중 하나가 환상이나 꿈의 장면이다. 환상과 꿈은 신경향파 소설 특유의 그로테스크한 분위기를 형성하는 데 중요한 역할을 하고, 주인공이 존재의 비약을 이룰 수 있게 한다는 공통점을 지닌다. 한편, 신경향파 소설의 결말부는 누군가가 다치거나 죽으며 망가져 버리는 파국적 상황을 그린다. 파국적 세계가 자아내는 공포감은 지금과는 다른 시간으로 넘어가고 싶다는 유토피아니즘적 욕망과 겹쳐 있다는 점에서 특이하다. 파국적인 마지막 순간에는 ‘지금’의 시간으로부터 비약하고자 하는 시간 인식이 잠재해 있는데, 충동에 가까운 그러한 인식은 단계적이고 점진적이며 합리적이지 않다. 즉 신경향파 소설의 ‘파국적 상상력’에 함께 새겨진 유토피아니즘적 시간 인식은 대안적 체계에의 충동과 관련되어 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims to see the violence in the New Tendency Novel as ‘proletarian grotesque’ getting out of the existing reading that saw the New Tendency Novel as a transitional thing moving toward proletarian literature and read the political unconscious from the novels. In the New Tendency Novels, reproduction of poverty shows the hungry reality of colonial Chosun, but is also connected with the point where it exceeds the reality. In those novels, poverty always drives the main character into the extreme situations, but whenever that happens, one of what appears frequently is a fantasy or dream scene. Fantasy and dream play an important role for forming a grotesque atmosphere intrinsic in the New Tendency Novels and both have something in common in that the main character makes a leap forward in existence. On the other hand, the ending part in the New Tendency Novels depicts the destructive situation that somebody gets injured, killed, or ruined. Fear, evoked by the catastrophic world is unique in that it is overlapped with the Utopian desires of hoping to go on toward the different time from ‘now.’ The recognition of time to leap from ‘the present’ at the last catastrophic moments is latent and such recognition close to impulse is not phased, gradual, and rational. In other words, the utopian recognition of time expressed with ‘destructive imagination’ in the New Tendency Novels is related to the impulse in the alternative world.
