모아진 몸 -프랑스 제3공화국 인구감소 논쟁으로 본 푸코의 개인, 인구, 통치성- = The Collected Body: Foucauldian Individual, Population and Governmentality in the Depopulation Debates of the French Third Republic

The article inquires into three different levels of Foucault` articulations about modern state formation: individual, population and governmentality. By critically examining the depopulation crisis and its aftermath in the fin-de-siecle France, the author argues that the interest in the population phenomenon was not simply macro-economically driven but also had deeper resonance vis-a-vis the new mode of power deployment. In so doing, Foucault`s three levels of articulation were central: the individual was constructed as an empirico-transcendental doublet to denote both socio-economic and politico-legal dimensions of human reality; population functioned not as a simple collection of individuals but as a doubly abstracted corporate body; to maintain and manage such difficult and complex makeup of the governed, governmentality as a new mode of power deployment intervened. Yet the article also shows that this process was not lopsided or structural one but heatedly contested political process, ripe with internal contradictions and conflicts.
