Due to Informatization as a result of developments in digital technology, in the 21st century, through various means like the Internet, which can be used any time, any where, people world wide are now able to easily and speedily exchange each other's cultures. Thus, the main objective of School Art Education has arisen as the ability to gain critical thinking methods in understanding and judging art cultural phenomenons correctly, and to foster the ability to accept and apply visual culture from within the influx of diverse visual mediums in contemporary society.
Visual Culture Education can effectively be accomplished with multi-cultural Art Education through Museum Education. By artistic experience of Art Education through field trips to Museums, students are presented with cultural space of a high standard, and thus these students can foster artistic sensitivity, and gain opportunities to directly see and feel real pieces of work, so as to more deeply understand national art culture and overcome the problems of art lessons that are generally carried out in the classroom.
To this, the following study, from the perspective of Middle School Art Education planned and applied an art class in relation to the activity of a museum field trip, thus aiming to present and learn a new teaching supervision method to make school art education gain practical substance.
This study searches for a solution through the liaison of museum and school by analysing the reality of utilizing museums for education, and researching the connection between museums and school art education, and the educational functions of museums. The implementation of the study was mainly divided into 3 units, categorized by 'Prehistoric Art, Baekjae Art, and Shinra Art', and suggested and carried out a teaching supervision plan regarding museums.
The results that were found through the implementation of the study were as follows.
First, the lesson connecting museums to school art education improved appreciation abilities of art pieces. Thus, fostering the appreciative ability to interpret and understand cultural heritage became an opportunity to expand artistic experience.
Second, experience activities that were carried out at school after visiting the museum became an experience for students to extend art into their everyday lives. In particular, from the activities in relation to prehistoric art that was carried out in the study, the program where students returned to prehistoric times by cooking rice in combed pattern earthenware, not only helped students to understand the awareness of art by ancestors, but was effective as a cooperative activity where good relations were formed between friends.
Third, there was a high preference for activities where practical handicraft pieces that could be used in everyday life were made in the learning process in the expression field. While supervising teaching and learning methods, it was noticed that students found more enjoyment in making pieces when they could possess the experience of making and using the pieces they had made, rather than simply repeating the remains found in museums in the same way, while addressing the field of expression.
Fourth, through lessons for learning the amassed cultural heritage of ancestors, students came to acquire an affection for our culture and could come in touch with museums in a friendly way.
The author of this study hopes that with this study as a base, more entertaining lesson models for art lessons in relation to museums are actively developed, and that education programs in museums of Korea are carried out more broadly and diversely. Also, it is hoped that this study will become an opportunity for teachers in the education scene to directly apply and utilize so that students may acknowledge the importance of the ways of life, culture and sense of art of our ancestors, and come to cherish our traditional culture.
