This study aims to reveal that Baudelaire’s poetry is understood as a painting written by the language system. It chose a well-known but difficult to understand poem, the last poem of Spleen in Fleurs du mal, to read the verbal painting according to the language analysis based on the interpretations of translation for which it compared the four Korean translations of Spleen. It first methodologically deepened the examinations of certain interpretive difficulties between the four translations at the level of language analysis to read a verbal painting, through its metaphors, its comparisons, its allegories. In this language analysis of translation this study tries to shed light on the exact meanings in their metaphorical context of a verbal painting ; for example, some interpretative problems, “cachots”(line 5), “un peuple muet d’infâmes arraignées”(line 11).
Then it continues the analysis of the pictorial writing of Spleen. It allows us to understand that Spleen is a surrealist painting represented by words and that this poem paints some landscapes from heaven to earth, from earth to isolated underground space, to enter the brain of the condemned man, poet himself, and attend his own funeral with the last image of the black flag on his tilted skull. And, subsequent studies still have to extend and deepen this study, ut pictura poesis and the surrealist paintings of Baudelaire in all the Fleurs du mal.
