In this paper, I try to analyze Danto’s 'End of Art' and to elucidate Pop Art’s significance in his theory. Danto claims that the advent of Pop Art gives rise to a structural change in visual art. First, Its advent shows us that we can't identify an artwork only by means of sensible property. Second, It shows us that anything can become an artwork only after the 1960’s.
Danto claims that to discern an artwork from the mere thing, we need to know a representational property which is perceptually unavailable. Also he claims that its awareness brings about the end of art. An artwork possesses a representational property which an object which is perceptually indiscernible from the work of art does not possess. Its sense brings about the change of belief systems on art in the West.
His claim that art has ended is not a logical conclusion derived from his philosophical premises, but an empirical claim drawn from the change of belief systems on art in the West. His claim that the narrative which started from Renaissance has ended is not an arbitrary narrative which he fabricates, but based upon the objective structure of art scenes in the West.
