This treatise undertakes to study the social ethics of Amos. During the reign of Jeroboam Ⅱ Israel was enjoying a prosperity which included conflicting social phenomena in itself. There were growing economic tendencies that the rich got richer while the poor became poorer. The righteous were suppressed in their political life. Likewise, the morals were corrupted and the religion was deteriorated into idolatry. Israel was in such a disorder that Amos, a man of God, sought to make his ideals of social ethics known and effective in the life of his times.
He expressed himself clearly in several passages that God will make a judgement on the unrighteousness if it does not put an end to itself, that, therefore, we must do our duty, that the establishment of social justice is possible only when we fulfil our responsibilities, and that the kingdom of God can be established on the earth where justice realized.
Justice among men might be established on condition that man does his duty, and the justice forms the sacred foundation of the society. The privileged are meant to be those who undertakes greater responsibilities. Should they fail to fulfil or avoid their responsibilities, they are doomed to be revenged in the hands of God.
For that reason, man should do his best to do his duty. In addition, we should offer worship to our God in response to the moral need and in the Holy Spirit and with hearty wishes.
God sent Amos to the decayed society of Israel with the intention of pronouncing social justice, and a decade later again he pronounced the ethics of love through Hosea. Then God sent Isaiah to have the holiness exalted through him. And finally Micah was sent as a prophet to propagate justice together with love and holiness. God intends to make his people come to maturity through these processes.
Justice, love, and holiness established between God and men as well as among men should be introduced among the human society, so that conflicts and division be prevented, that unlimited hostility be ceased, and that community of trustworthiness be accomplished.
Now that Amos had anticipated the realization of the kingdom of God where responsibilities and justice are established, what should be the task to be undertaken by the Christianity at this time to the cause of social justice? In the present human society which is in greater need of social justice than ever, great efforts should be made towards pursuit of new humanity, establishing the responsibilities of the privileged, approval of basic civil rights, establishment of social order, realization of justice and the kingdom of God.
Thus Amos left an important message for the christianity of the present day.
