This research project aims to study the ways in which certain groups of women continue to be subject to violent colonial experiences even during the postcolonial period and attempt to overcome such colonial social structure. This paper gives particular attention to the ways in which those women form their postcolonial subjectivities in their efforts to overcome such colonial realities. This study is about subaltern others, and it also is concerned with the way in which scholars in postcolonial studies have to cope with ethical questions as they deal with postcolonial issues such as the subaltern. This is related to how postcolonial scholars deal with the reality that they have to use subaltern others as the means of their research and how they can overcome their vertical relationship with the subaltern and instead pursue a horizontal relationship with them that can possibly lead to their ethical relationship with them. To this end, this paper analyzes Mahasweta Devi’s “Douloti the Bountiful” to see how tribal women in India attempt to form postcolonial subjectivities, and director Byon Young-ju’s Nazen Moksori trilogy, documentary films to see how Korean surviving “comfort women” attempt to form their postcolonial subjectivities. Gayatri Spivak’s writings on the subaltern will pr
