Purpose
Anticonvulsive is frequently used as a bowel preparation for the virtual colonoscopy but there is a lack of its efficacy studies. This study aims to investigate the usefulness of the examination by comparing the diameter of the 2D and 3D images before and after the use of anticonvulsive inpatients without colon distension during virtual colonoscopy.
Meterials and methods
We performed virtual colonoscopy procedures on 40patients without colon distension among the hospital’s inpatients from Fedruary 1,2009 thorough June 30,2009. There were 27 men and 13 women objects with average ages of 59years for men and 58.7years for women. With the confirmation of a radiologist, we intravenously injected anticonvulsive (10ml: 1ml of anticonvulsive diluted in 9ml of saline) 3minutes before the examination when the colon was not distension. We compared and analyzed the results by using the images before and after the use of anticonvulsive and measured the lengths.
Results
There was a significant difference between the before and after the use of anticonvulsive, which is used as a bowel preparation agent. Especially in the patients with sigmoid colon of intestines, it resulted in 40% expansion of the colon, which increased the efficiency of the examination.
Conclusion
Similar to other examinations, virtual colonoscopy will also yield more satisfactory results when the modem medical technology advancements are combined with the experience of physicians and radiologists.
