종교현상학의 창조적 다양성과 비판적 변형―북미종교현상학파와 요아힘 바흐를 중심으로― = Creative Diversity and Critical Transformation in Phenomenology of Religion: The Cases of North American School and Joachim Wach

This paper deals with the creative diversity and critical transformation in North American School of Phenomenology of Religion by analyzing main schools and major figures. In the USA, there are three main schools of phenomenology of religion: Chicago, Harvard, and UC Santa Barbara. Joachim Wach, who had moved from Germany to the USA under the persecution of Nazi party, contributed to founding Chicago school and strengthening the historical and systematic study of religions based on phenomenology. M. Eliade interpreted religious symbols by using the dialectics of the sacred and the profane. J. Smith emphasized the differences and contexts and created ‘the phenomenology of rebellion.’ W. C. Smith paid attention to the personal approach to religion, and N. Smart formed ‘the cross-cultural phenomenology’ by proposing the multi-dimensional anatomy of religions. The Korean history of acceptance and transformation in phenomenology of religion should be examined in further studies.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 종교현상학의 창조적 다양성과 비판적 변형의 과정을 밝히기 위하여해 북미종교현상학파의 특징을 사례로 분석하고, ‘시카고학파’를 세운 요아힘 바흐의 생애와 종교관 및 방법론과 유형론을 검토한다. 첫째, 후설 현상학을 수학하고 미국 브라운대와 시카고대에서 종교학을 교수한 바흐는 현상학에 기초해 사상·실천·공동체를 통한 종교경험의 표현에 주목하며 종교사회학을 발전시켰다. 후임자 엘리아데는 ‘성속의 변증법’을 통하여 비교종교학적 유형론을 전개했으며, 조나단 스미스는 차이와 맥락을 강조하는 ‘저항의 종교현상학’을 제시하였다. 둘째, ‘하버드학파’로서 인격주의 종교연구를 강조한 캔트웰 스미스는 종교 간 대화 및 종교신학의 필요성을 강조했고, 존 칼만은 네덜란드현상학파의 방법론을 수용하며 비교신학을 시도하였다. 셋째로, 니니안 스마트는 캘리포니아대 산타바바라캠퍼스에서 ‘교차문화적 종교현상학’을 제시하며 종교에 대한 다차원적 해부학을 구축하였다. 바흐의 경우, 초기에는 신학과 종교학의 차이점을 부각시키며 종교학의 자율성을 강조했지만, 시카고대학교에서는 신학과 종교학의 접점과 통합을 모색하였다. 결론적으로 북미현상학파의 창조적 다양성과 비판적 변형의 사례를 통하여 한국의 종교현상학 수용사에 대한 후속 연구를 기대해 본다.
