중력모형을 이용한 동아시아 지역의 경제통합에 대한 무역창출효과 분석 = The Analysis Using the Gravity Model of Trade Creation Effect of Economic Integration in East Asia

국문 초록 (Abstract)

현재 세계경제는 크게 GATT/WTO 체제의 다자주의(Multilateralism)와 신기능주의(Neo-Functionalism)를 통한 지역주의(Regioanlism) 두 가지 큰 흐름이 있다. 그 중에서도 현재 지역주의를 상징하는 지역경제통합은 급속히 증가하고 있는 추세이다. 세계경제에 지역경제통합이 출현하게 된 이론적 배경에는 기능주의와 신기능주의가 있다. 그리고 동아시아 내 지역경제통합의 필요성은 지역주의와 신지역주의를 통해 이루어졌다. 이러한 지역경제통합의 이론적 배경을 바탕으로 동아시아의 유력한 지역경제통합체인 ASEAN+3과 한·중·일의 출현에 따른 무역창출효과를 추정하기 위하여 중력모형을 이용하였다. 그리고 OLS, 임의효과모형, 그리고 고정효과모형 중 가장 적합한 모형을 선택하기 위한 하우스만 테스트를 실행하여 고정효과모형을 중심으로 추정하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

There are two main waves on the economy in the world. One is multilateralism that is based on the GATT/WTO system, another is regionalism which is composed of neo-functionalism. Nowadays, 213 Regional Trade Agreements(RTAs) arc notified to the GATT/WTO then the number of RTAs is increasing more and more speedily. Moreover, a huge regional bloc such as EU and NAFTA appears as well. All of the countries have attempted to establish FTA in order to get an economic benefit, bargaining rights, and the political-diplomatic superiority. At this time, East Asia that is called the third pillar of the world economy is focused on the pattern of FTA.
This paper analyzed the trade creation effect of two regional economic integration in East Asia using panel dataset from 1996 to 2006. Hausman test shows up which one is exactly appropriate between random effect estimation and fixed effect estimation to use panel dataset. It depends on whether or not existence or nonexistence of the correlation between unobserved omitted factors and variables. Fixed effect estimation is suitable for this paper by Hausman test. Both of regional economic integration scenarios give rise to the trade creation effect of 17.5% as long as they are established respectively.
