D.H. Lawrence`s Kangaroo has been lumped and even dismissed with other so-called "leadership" novels by the author. This essay, however, contends that there is something unique about Kangaroo that deserves critical attention. More than the others, it is based on Lawrence`s own experiences as he traveled in Australia, and what emerges is a narrative different from any Lawrence created before or after. Although he is famous as a proponent of the body and bodily experience, here the body evokes in him fear and even loathing. Along with this response is a more overt flirtation with fascistic ideas than can be found in his other works. Using feminist psychoanalytic theory, this essay analyzes Lawrence`s psychological struggle and establishes a link between male-supremacist and racist ideologies and the body gendered female. Lawrence believed that he had left behind patriarchal culture and confronted a blank slate in Australia, yet this absence of culture left him vulnerable to a confrontation with pure body, one that leads to revelations about the irrational fears lurking below the surface of authoritarian political movements.
