Japanese low activation ferritic steel(JLF) was evaluated to be a good material as the parts of the heat exchanger such as blanket, diverter. In order to apply this material to the various fields, the development of jointing technique between JLF steel and other materials has been required. Recently, a jointing technology development of JLF-1 steel (Fe-9Cr-2W-V-Ta) and Stainless steel(STS304) have been investigated for diffusion bonding, brazing, roll bonding, explosive bonding and hot isostatic pressing. However, a friction welding is one of the most popular welding methods for joining between different materials such as a tube. In this paper, joints of JLF-1 steel to STS304 were performed by friction welding method. The optimal conditions of friction welding were discussed. In order to evaluate the weld quality in process, nondestructive technique of acoustic emission was used.
