The essay is focused upon analyzing the iconological content of Hakgi-yupyeon selected by Jo Sik, which can be regarded as a methodology of understanding his Confucian world-view. It starts from a science of diagram and its understanding, and the point of argument is a thinking way of Confucianism in it. As a clue to understanding a science of diagram, I try to analyze some diagrams in . This holds the key not only to Jo Sik`s view of Changeology but also to his world-view of Confucianism. As Confucianists argued, he attaches importance to the axiological essence of ethical view, that is, self-introspection and its practice. He emphasizes Confucian concepts of Sincerity and Respect. Given the unity of the heavenly and the humane, he seeks an ideal stage that Respect, as a virtue of Humane Way, is in accordance with Sincerity, as a virtue of Heavenly Way. Here, it seems to me that he uses a device of allegorical understanding projected in images of diagrams. Consequently, he effectively argues the canon of self-cultivation as justifiable law for a learning of Way, and simply and easily reveals an archetype of life practice.
