      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

      P. Louis de Poirot (賀淸秦), S. J., was born in Lorraine, France, in 1735, and brought up in Italy. In 1756, he entered a Jesuit novitiate of Florence in the Province of Rome, and was ordained a Jesuit priest in around 1765. In 1771, he arrived a t Beijing (北京) by way of Guangdong (廣東). Residing a t Beidang (北堂) in Beijing, he preached the gospel, baptized Chinese people and worked as an interpreter between China and Western countries, with his excellent command of the Chinese and Manchu languages. He even taught Chinese and Manchu to newly arriving Western missionaries. He worked also as a renowned painter in the court of Qing (淸). He translated most part of the Bible into Vulgar Chinese and the Manchu language before 1790. He died in Beijing on December 13th, 1813.
      P. de Poirot has left us the following important works:
      1. Gu-Xin Sheng-Jing (古新聖經), a 34-volume Bible in Chinese translation, with an introduction a t the beginning of each volume and commentaries a t the end of each chapter.
      2. A 25-volume Bible with translations and notes in Manchu (Most part of the Old Testament including Deuterocanonica, Matthew, and the acts of the apostles are translated into Manchu), with an introduction on each volume and commentaries on each chapter.
3 Prefazione o introduzione alle sublimissime famiglian istruzioni di Ceng-tzu-quogen-hoang-ti, an Italian translation of S˘engzu gosin hu ̄wangdi-i booi tacihiyan-i ten-i gisun (聖祖仁皇帝庭訓格言), the original written in Manchu and Chinese.
      4. Less than ten letters sent to several people. Our remaining tasks are: (1) To investigate the life and work of P. de Poirot in more detail, clarifying the more or less obscure parts, (2) To check and confirm the list of the Chinese and Manchu translations of the Testaments by P. de Poirot, searching for all his undiscovered translations of the Testaments, and (3) To look for other letters and writings of his which have not known so far.
