음악의 정서표현성에 대한 현대분석철학의 논의와 그 한계 = Contemporary Analytic Philosophy on Musical Expressiveness

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In this essay, I first introduce the issues concerning musical expressiveness raised by analytic philosophers and their common assumptions about musical expressiveness. Then, I closely examine the discussions on musical expressiveness which have been offered by analytic philosophers categorizing them into arousal theory, imagination theory, and cognitive theory. I critically investigate the views of each theory and the way the common assumptions of analytic philosophers on musical expressiveness are claimed to be achieved in each theory. I thereby present the insights embedded in their views and the problems remained to be solved both from a micro-perspective and from a broader perspective. Special regard is paid to the fact that the discussions on musical expressiveness by analytic philosophers oscillate between the properties of music and the listeners’ experience of music without explicit manifestation of the line between them. I argue that this reflects the dual nature of musical expressiveness, and that this duality of musical expressiveness should be considered and clarified for the discussion on musical expressiveness to yield a more productive result.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 음악의 정서표현성에 대한 현대분석철학의 쟁점들과가정들을 소개하고, 음악의 정서표현성에 대한 분석철학의 논의를 환기론과 상상이론, 그리고 인지론으로 대별하여 각각의 이론이 음악의 정서표현성에 관련된 쟁점들에 대해 제시한 견해들을 살펴본 후 음악의 정서표현성에 대한 분석철학의 가정들이 각각의 이론에서 만족된다고 주장되는 방식들을 비판적으로 고찰한다. 그럼으로써 이 글은 음악의 정서표현성에 대한 분석철학의 논의에 숨어 있는 직관과 문제점, 남겨진 과제를 미시적인 차원과 더불어 거시적인 차원에서 제시한다. 특히 이 글은 음악의 정서표현성에 대한 분석철학의 논의가 생산적인 방향으로 나아가기 위해서는 음악의 정서표현성의 본성이 갖는 이중성, 즉 음악이 표현하는 정서가 ‘음악 안’에 있다고 여겨지는 것만큼이나 ‘청자 안’에 있다고 여겨지는 특성에 대한 고려와 해명이 요청된다고 제안한다."
