1980년대 박완서 단편 소설에 나타난 중산층의 존재방식과 윤리 = The Existence and Ethics of Middle Classes Appeared in Park Wan-Seo’s Short Novels in 1980’s

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this article is to analyze the existence of middle classes appeared in Park Wan-Seo’s short novels in 1980’s. Under the forementioned theme, following stand points for analyses were established including personal experience of Korean war, construction of Gangnam and new town in 1970’s to 1980’s, and pro-democratic political college students. The author intended to document a new viewpoint for discussion of middle classes described in Park Wan-Seo’s novels, through analyses of their mindset and existence as conscious, economical and political significance. In chapter 2, the way of main character’s maintaining her own daily life through re-experience of Korean war as a daily ritual was discussed. In chapter 3, imagination and reassignment of middle classes to associate their courtesy and space were analyzed. In chapter 4, an issue of reducing political issues to a daily ethics as emergence of political colleg activist was discussed.
At first chapter, experience of Korean war functioned as a kind of ritual for punishment of minor deviation from ethics and maintenance of daily life. Middle class families re-experience the trauma of disintegration of their own families during Korea war, and reflect peaceful and quiet present through pseudo-decease of the mother. After the ritual, daily life became recovered and more concrete. In chapter 2, by “Finding flowers” the change of imaging space and re-arrangement of logics in middle classes were discussed, in the 1980s when intensification of local disparities in Seoul and reorganization of region and courtesy were ongoing. Imagination of residence location was originated from the association of region and courtesy, so that arrangement of courtesy was different between location. The author analyzed this issue through “Lost” which described segregation of Seoul, which implied discipline and obedience, and Seong-nam, which implied liberation and intemperance. In chapter did discussed how the middle class family respond to a political symbol appeared as a form of activist college students. In “A epsiode of sundown” unfamiliar fear of middle class family against political activists was elaborated by his background and personal history; a sense of insecurity on any vague and unstable issues was tried to be accepted as a moral and ethical substitutes by a typical middle class families, and that deprives all the political issues of their political fundamentals. Also, such a viewpont transforms political activists into an issue of unhappy personal background of early growth, so that keen political oppositions in the 1980’s were covered into a personal sense of guilt and repentance of common mothers. Above strategy was a kind of modest compromise to maintain peaceful daily life without political turmoil. This is the foremost significance of Park Wan-Seo’s novels in appreciating unique existence of middle class families, apart from political and historical evaluation of their beings.
