Messrs. Editors,--This old Town, formerly comprising the towns of Hadley, South Hadley, Amherst, Hatfield and Grabby, lies on a bend in the Connecticut, opposite Northampton, and under Mt. Holyoke, which rises on the East, and overlooks one of the loveliest portions of the world. It was settled by a colony from Hartford and Springfield in 1659, who went there for greater religious freedom, and laid out the town on a grand scale, the main street or road, being, I believe, sixteen rods wide, and planted with a double row of magnificent elms on each side.
