북한 군부 엘리트의 경력 이동 연결망 분석 = An Analysis on the North Korean Military Elite`s Career Shift Network

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The aim of this study is to provide a in-depth look at North Korean military elites on the basis of an network analysis on their career shifts. For the purpose of this study, we collected data on 45 elites who have been assigned to either National Defense Commission (NDC) or Party`s Central Military Committee (CMC) in the years between 1994 and 2013, thereby constructing two career-shift networks according to the presidency of Kim Jong-Il and Kim Jung-eun, respectively. Findings go as follows. First, the most central career in North Korean miliary elite`s career-shift networks was party organizations. Second, structural importance of surveillance institutions increased in Kim Jong-eun`s era if compared to Kim Jong-Il`s era. Third, surveillance institutions provided civilian elites who graduated from civilian universities with path through which they ascended into military elite positions. Therefore, in Kim Jung-eun`s era there existed two separated paths used by two distinguished groups who have developed their career in the military sector and civilian sector, respectively. Results give an implication that Kim Jung-eun`s military elites are not likely to have strong cohesion, which is essential for the regime stability in North Korea.
