본 연구에서는 국제적 보호종이면서 천연기념물인 독수리를 대상으로 폐사원인과 환경오염물질 축적 정도를 조사하였다. 군사접경지역(DMZ 일원) 및 통영지역에서 수거한 총 76개체를 대상으로 폐사원인을 추정한 결과, 외상, 탈진, 감전 등이 주요 요인으로 파악되었고, 특히 관통상이 19.7%로 나타났다. 환경오염물질 중 특히 약 15%의 폐사체에서 납중독을 일으킬 수 있는 고농도(>25 mg/g dry weight)의 납이 간 조직에서 검출되었다. 폐사요인에 따른 간과 근육 조직에서의 납 농도는 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았다. 이러한 결과는 국내에 월동하는 독수리가 납 오염에 심각히 노출되어 있다는 것을 나타낸다. 향후, 독수리 월동개체군에 대한 생태독성영향 평가가 시급하다고 판단된다.

In the present study, we conducted necropsies on globally threatened Cinereous Vultures (Aegypius monachus) overwintering in the Republic of Korea, and investigated the levels of lead (Pb) in their tissues. We investigated 76 carcasses, and identified trauma, injury caused by shot, emaciation, and electrocution, and the complex patterns that are associated with 19.7% of deaths from a shot-related wound. The livers of approximately 15% of the carcasses contained levels of Pb compatible with death from Pb intoxication (> 25 mg/g dry weight). There were no significant differences in the levels of Pb among samples with factors that were the probable causes of death. These results indicate that Cinereous Vultures overwintering in the Republic of Korea are succumbing to abnormal Pb contamination. They raise further questions as to whether such toxicant exposure is affecting the populations of this globally protected vulture.
