This study aims to clarify the effect of involvement experience of elementary school students in media sports of the Winter Olympic Games on motivation for participation in ice sports and intention of constant participation. This study intends to not only revitalize winter sports and ice sports even after the end of the Winter Olympic Games, but also expand the base and provide basic materials for infrastructure establishment, after figuring out with which motivation the elementary school students, who experienced media sports of 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games, participate in ice sports, and which motivations influence their intention of constant participation.
This study was oriented to 310 elementary school students, who were participating in short track speed skating, figure skating and speed skating in 8 different ice rinks of Seoul and Gyeonggido. A total of questionnaire results of 264 students were analyzed except those of 46 students who answered in an inappropriate way. For the survey tool, questionnaire was used. The questionnaire was composed of 35 questions in total; 2 questions on demographic features, 9 questions on involvement experience in media sports (challenge and interest), 18 questions on participation motivations (joy, social display, health‧physical condition, skill achievement), and 6 questions on intention of constant participation.
For data processing, SPSS 18.0 version program was used to conduct frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, multiple regression analysis, simple regression analysis, and Sobel test. The analysis process led to the research results as follows:
Firstly, according to the results of influences of involvement experience in media sports of the Winter Olympic Games on motivation for participation in ice sports, the subfactor, which is challenge of involvement experience in media sports, gave significant influences on the subfactors like participation motivations of joy, social display and skill achievement, while other subfactor of interest gave significant influences on joy, health‧physical condition, and skill achievement. In sum, it is considered that the subfactors of involvement experience in media sports, which are challenge and interest, give significant influences on joy and skill achievement, which belong to internal motivations among subfactors of participation motivations.
Secondly, according to the results of influences of involvement experience in media sports of the Winter Olympic Games on intention of constant participation in ice sports, the subfactors of involvement experience in media sports, which are challenge and interest, gave significant influences on intention of constant participation.
Thirdly, according to the results of influences of participation motivation for ice sports on intention of constant participation in ice sports, only joy and skill achievement among subfactors of participation motivation give significant influences on intention of constant participation.
Fourthly, the results of mediating effect of participation motivation in the influences of involvement experience of elementary school students in media sports of the Winter Olympic Games on intention of constant participation in ice sports show that mediator regression analysis is significant, but it turns out that no mediating effect was observed since there was no significant power of test in the Sobel test.
In sum, the involvement experience of elementary school students in media sports of the Winter Olympic Games gave significant influences on both participation motivation for ice sports and intention of constant participation, while giving positive influences on the internal motivation factors among participation motivations (joy and skill achievement). At the same time, the internal motivations (joy and skill achievement) also gave significant influences on intention of constant participation. On the other hand, social display among external motivations is influenced by factors of challenge of involvement experience in media sports, while health‧physical condition are influenced by the factor of interest of participation interest in media sports. However, neither of them gives significant influences on intention of constant participation. Moreover, it turned out that there is no mediating effect of participation motivation in this cause-and-effect relationship. Therefore, this made it possible to understand that the greatest influential power in the Winter Olympic Games lies in media sports.
