Railway axle is one of the most important components of railway system. It has been reported that the lightweight design of railway axle and wheel(unsprung mass) achieve fine noise and vibration performance and increase energy efficiency. Hollow axle design of railway axle is one of the effective method for weight reduction. However, existing hollow railway axles have same bore diameter over the whole axial position. The purpose of present study is to establish and evaluate the new design method of railway hollow axle which can be modified bore diameter at each axial position. To evaluate the light railway axle, Finite Element Method(FEM) was applied according to European Norm(EN). Consequently, 25% light model of railway axle was developed.
