This research addresses the Transfer Matrix method for the linear static analysis of variable section arch bridges. The Transfer Matrix method is used extensively for the structural analysis because of its merit in the theoretical background and applicability. Even personal computer can be mobilized for a complicated structural analysis because this method requires less memory capacity than the well-known finite element method and the direct stiffness method do.
This thesis presents the linear static analysis of variable section arch bridges based on the Transfer Matrix method, which has been compared with the exact method and the finite element method. Excellent agreement is obtained. The result of analysis are as following;
1. In the case of Hinged-end and Fixed-end of arch, as the height of beam in the variable section grows higher, axial displacement and deflection decrease, but bending moment and shearing force increase and axial force is nearly constant.
2. As Rise/Span ratio of arch becomes lower, its appearance is beautiful, while displacements and stress-resultant increase, the steel-weight gains more and more, and stress and shear force by deformation increase.
