국문 초록 (Abstract)

21세기에 출판된 냉전 기원 연구들은 학문적으로 크게 주목받지 못했다. 그것은 이들이 냉전 종식과 소련 해체 이후 성립한 1990년대 신정통주의의 후속 연구로만 단순히 취급되었기 때문이다. 이 논문은 21세기 연구들이 냉전 기원 문제에 관해 신정통주의와는 구별되는 독자적인 발견과주장을 포함하고 있다고 주장한다. 이들은 1946년까지의 미국 대외 정책의 복잡성을 더 세밀하게 드러내었으며, 소련의 수세성을 다양한 영역에서 입증했고, 냉전의 기원에 구제국, 식민지, ‘소국’ 등 제3자의 기여를 충실히 드러낼 수 있었다. 이런 혁신이 가능했던 이유는 21세기의 신연구들이 신정통주의보다 훨씬 넓고 체계적인 자료에 대한 객관적 분석을 토대로, 과거 후기수정주의의 방법론적 모색을 생산적인 방식으로 계승했기때문이다.

Studies on the origins of the Cold War conducted in the 21st century have garnered insufficient scholarly attention. They have simply been categorized as post-Cold War studies and sometimes considered an epilogue to the neo-orthodox school that emerged subsequent to the dissolution of communist regimes in the 1990s and overshadowed the post-revisionism. This article argues that the new studies in the 21st century distinguish themselves from the neo-orthodox perspective by offering more systematic and objective analyses of primary sources, while productively inheriting the post-revisionism’s methodological advancements. These studies reveal the complexity of pre-1947 US foreign policy, elucidate Stalin’s defensive diplomacy in the postwar era, and underscore the roles of third party actors, including old empires and colonies, in the origins of the Cold War.
