This study aims to compare and examine how onomatopoeia and mimetic words are presented in terms of micro-level information in Korean dictionaries from a lexicographical perspective. To achieve this, the study compares and examines the ways in which microlevel information for onomatopoeic words is presented in six significant major dictionaries in the history of lexicography.
The results of the study confirm that there is inconsistency in the morphological analysis of symbolic words and the distinction between onomatopoeia and mimetic words in Korean dictionaries.
It is argued that the morphological analysis of symbolic words in Korean dictionaries should be based strictly on principles of morpheme analysis. This study also pointed out that in some dictionaries, the meaning explanations are referred to representative words, which is considered inappropriate from the user's perspective. Additionally, the study suggests that related words, such as word-final correspondence pairs, should be included in the dictionary. Lastly, the study points out the lack of principled treatment of parts of speech for onomatopoeia in Korean dictionaries, particularly criticizing the uniform classification of onomatopoeia as adverbs.
