In this research, discussed are how Korean traditional music, excluded from the public education and therefore on the decline since the Japanese occupation through a certain period of time after the Liberation in 1945, has developed to the present state, and what conditions should be presented by adopting such factors in order to revitalize locally Korean traditional music in Cheongju
Since a department of Korean traditional music was first established at the Seoul National University in 1959, many universities around the country founded a department of Korean traditional music, and in many local areas public orchestras for Korean traditional music where most graduates could play Korean traditional music were launched. Also a competition for Korean traditional music at the national level was held to give an opportunity for cultivating talented Korean musicians. It seems that all of these factors contributed to the growth of Korean traditional music.
In consideration of these findings, it is concluded that the following factors should be practiced in order to revitalize locally Korean traditional music in Cheongju:
First, a department of Korean traditional music should be established at the Chungbuk National University located in Cheongju.
Second, the National Institute of Korean traditional music should be built in Cheongju.
Third, a national competition for Korean traditional music commemorating Dr. Jang Sa-hun should be regularly held in Cheongju.
