This paper represents an attempt to give concrete meaning to the late Rev. Pil Do Joung’s emphasis on the experience of ‘receiving grace’. It was observed that his notion of experiential faith had many similarities to the Puritans’ understanding of ‘experimentalism’. His sermons and seminars were analyzed and six specific ways by which he described the meaning of the experience of grace. They are (1) the experience of conversion, (2) the work of the Holy Spirit, (3) suffering as a means of grace, (4) encountering the Lord, (5) listening to the voice of the Lord, and (6) the inner sense of bliss. His emphasis on conversion corresponded well with the Puritan practice of ‘the narrative of grace.’ In terms of the work of the Holy Spirit, Joung showed much distinction from the idea of the second blessing in the Pentecostal pneumatology; instead, he stressed the importance of the doctrine of regeneration and issued a warning that many in the church have not been regenerated and are yet to be saved. By suffering, saints are brought face to face with their Savior. Joung emphasized the experience of a personal encounter with the Lord, and it is observed that this notion of ‘Christian Personalism’ is an important theological perspective to complement the traditional logo-centric formulations. Joung’s emphasis on the experience of listening to the voice of the Lord was interpreted as the work of the Holy Spirit to personally apply the Word of God revealed in the Scripture, and it was explained according to the tri-perspectival epistemology of John Frame. Finally, his emphasis on the experience of inner spiritual bliss was seen as an echo of Jonathan Edwards’ reflections on ‘religious affections’, and it was seen as the major strength that lies at the heart of Joung’s ministerial effectiveness.
