This paper consists of three major parts. The first part studied closely the changes brought on by modernization of mass production process to different areas of industry and the morphing from mass-production to mass-customization. Various practices of the mass-customization by different companies were studied to survey how the concept is being applied in today's markets. The second part studied how to apply the mass-customization to the current domestic cellular phone market. Three pre-conditions were suggested to practically utilize the processes of mass-customization in study. In order to meet the needs of the consumers in ever changing cellular phone industry, the paper suggested standardization of platforms, modulation of major parts, and a production system from which the process of Built-To-Order can be carried out. The third part studied practical design solution of mass-customization for cell phone industry.
This paper concluded that, with market saturation and cut-throat competition in virtually every industry, companies must employ mass-customization to stay competitive.
