Jeolla-namdo Province is an important place to preserve and transmit the traditional folk culture such as Full Moon Festival in January. The Festival is the most important village event in order to bond the communal identity in the traditional society. However, the Festival has not been held for years due to the Corona Pendemic. The Festival held in this year has a tremendous value to preserve and transmit the traditional culture.
It is the field report on the Full Moon Festival held in Jangheung-gun in Jeolla-namdo Province by Folk Music Research Team of Chonnam National University. The coastal area preserves a distinctive communal ritual that is different from other areas of the Province. The communal ritual in this area is called Gungo (lit. “military drum”) or Geumgo (lit. “metal and drum”). The Reserach Team went to Hogye Village, Unju Village, and Bangchon Village. It is a field report of the communal rituals and their musico-cultural context.
