스펙터클화된 버바팀 연극 버바팀의 새로운 응용방식에 관한 소고 = A Study on the Verbatim Theatre with Spectacle: How Verbatim as a Theatrical Methodology can be Applied

국문 초록 (Abstract)

버바팀 연극은 단순히 말을 인용한다는 방법에 기반한 비허구적 이야기가 아니라 현실에서 발화된 말을 매개하려는 강한 의지를 지닌 실재의 이야기이다. 그리고 이것은 현실을 그대로 모방(복사, 복제)하는 글쓰기가 아니라 실제 인물과의 만남(인터뷰, 진술, 증언, 고백 등)을 통해 구술/녹음/채록된 말, 그것이 발화된 흔적 등 말을 둘러싼 현상적 측면을 포착/재현하는 퍼포먼스의 탐색이다. 사실 버바팀 연극이 가장 활발하게 실험되어온 영국 연극의 사례를 보면 90년대까지의 버바팀 연극들은 대개 작가적/연출적 개입을 최소화하기 위해 노력하며 발화된 말의 정확한 인용을 통해 공연의 신뢰성을 확보하는데 방점을 두었지만, 21세기를 지나면서는 건조한 다큐멘트로서의 현실의 말과 연극적 스펙터클을 연결시키기 위해 다양한 형식/양식과 접목하는과감한 버바팀 실험들이 목도되기 시작한다. 음악으로 전달되는 버바팀, 무용적 움직임으로 표현되는 버바팀, 시청각적 스펙터클을 강조하는 버바팀, 장소특정성, 이머시브 등의 형식을 활용하는 버바팀 사례들은 바로 버바팀된 ‘말’과 무대/배우의‘몸’의충돌에서 빚어지는 새로운 재현방식을 둘러싼 고민의 구체적인 결과물들이다. 이에본고는 버바팀의 새로운 변주방식으로서 퍼포먼스 가능성을 새롭게 탐색하는 로이드뉴슨(Lloyd Newson)/DV8의 버바팀 신체극과 알레키 블라이드(Alecky Blythe)/레코디드 딜리버리(Recorded Delivery)의 버바팀 음악극의 사례 연구를 통해 버바팀이 응용될 수 있는 창의적 가능성에 대해 고민해 보고자 한다.

A Study on the Verbatim Theatre with Spectacle: How Verbatim as a Theatrical Methodology can be Applied Nam, Ji-Soo Verbatim theatre is a form of documentary theatre which is exclusively based on the spoken words of real people. Its aim is not only to copy what is really said but also to explore phenomenal aspects in/around the spoken words. In fact, many British verbatim theatre in 80s and 90s have focused on mimetic representation in order to show authenticity as a documentary characteristic. However, it has been common that the verbatim theatre combines various experimental forms and styles to create the documentariness/reality in 21st centuries: For instances, verbatim musical, verbatim physical theatre, verbatim media performance, verbatim site- specific theatre, verbatim immersive theatre etc. In this aspect, this article tries to describe on how verbatim is creatively adapted in contemporary theatre as focused of DV8’s verbatim physical theatre and Recorded Delivery’s verbatim musical, the representative cases of contemporary verbatim theatre.
